A photograph I took of Fenerbahçe volleyball star Arina Fedorovtseva was published on Sport Interia, one of Poland’s most widely read sports platforms, to illustrate their article covering the diplomatic controversy sparked by Poland’s decision to deny the Russian player a visa to compete in the Women’s Champions League match against PGE Budowlani Łódź — a decision that triggered fierce reactions from Moscow, including calls for sanctions against Poland from a former Olympic champion.
A reminder that sports photography can illuminate stories with deep political and human significance, reaching audiences well beyond the world of sport itself.
